A Director’s Eye

Janos Szasz has spent four decades directing at the highest levels of European and American film and theatre. His film The Witman Boys premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival; Woyzeck was Hungary’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was named one of the world’s ten up-and-coming directors by the Sundance Film Festival and Daily Variety.

He served as Director of the American Repertory Theater Institute at Harvard University, where he trained actors and directors for three years, and has directed more than thirty stage productions across Europe, the United States, and Hungary — including A Streetcar Named Desire and Angels in America for Arena Stage in Washington, DC.

He holds a Doctor Habilitatus from the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest and is a member of the European Film Academy and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Art Department. He now offers a limited number of private coaching engagements in the Washington, DC area — working directly with actors, directors, writers, and producers on the specific project or skill in front of them.
